Polešovice

Sites

We currently cultivate two hectares of vineyards, ranging in age from 10 to 60 years. To ensure diversity and production stability, we additionally purchase up to 25% of grapes from surrounding growers based on long-term cooperation. This allows us to work with a diverse mosaic of plots spread across the cadastral areas of the villages of Polešovice, Syrovín, Boršice and Nedakonice. This diversity enables us to create wines with different characters, despite using the same grape variety.

Climate

The average annual temperature in this region is approximately 9 °C, with an annual rainfall of only around 550 mm/m². This makes it exceptionally dry and at the limit for grape growth and yield. As a result, the plants produce fewer grapes with lower weight, looser structure and smaller berries throughout the year. These factors significantly influence the taste and aroma of the resulting wine. In addition, thanks to lower temperatures during ripening, the acid loss is gradual, which contributes to balanced freshness despite low rainfall.

Exposure

The gently rolling landscape at the foot of the Chřiby offers varied slope orientations, with south and southeast exposures predominating. These ensure optimal sunlight exposure, which is essential especially for late-ripening varieties – including Riesling.

The remarkable diversity of natural communities within a small area stems from differences in elevation. Between the valley floodplain of the Lower Moravian Basin and the mountain peaks, there is a difference of over 420 metres. This elevation contrast also played a key role in shaping the local soils.

Soil

At lower altitudes, clayey, marly, or gravelly soils prevail, typically near streams and rivers. At higher elevations, the soil composition usually depends on the nature of the soil-forming factors. Intense wind gusts during Pleistocene ice ages gave rise to windblown sands, calcareous loess, and loess clays. In contrast, soils whose parent rock is sandstone, claystone, siltstone or conglomerate are the result of long-term sedimentation and subsequent hardening of particles in areas of the sea floor that were once located here.
